FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Maryville man charged with aggravated domestic assault; victim in serious condition

Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong said a 64-year-old Maryville man is charged with domestic aggravated assault today after shooting his son in the chest during an argument.

The victim, 44-year-old Christopher Kirkland, N. Sixth Street, Maryville, is listed in serious condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

John Tilden Kirkland, 64, of Andrew Way, Maryville, was charged a short time ago with aggravated domestic assault. He is being held in the Blount County Correctional Facility on a $15,000 bond pending a hearing in Blount County General Sessions Court at 9 a.m. February 10.

At around 7:30 Sunday evening, Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence on Andrew Way in Maryville to the call of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the victim, Christopher Kirkland, inside the residence with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken by Rural/Metro Ambulance Service to U.T. Medical Center. Witnesses said John Kirkland and his son Christopher Kirkland were arguing, when they heard gunshots coming from the living room.

Additional charges could be forthcoming. The incident is still under investigation.
